The following poem was written by local CSA farmer and Art Garden board member John Hoffman, in response to the exhibit’s theme and title.

Together We Are

Together we are more than 7 billion

Together we are, from a genetic point of view

85% the same as mice,

98% the same as certain monkeys

Together we are home to

trillions upon trillions of microorganisms

Together we are an encore of stuff from stars

Together we are not as heavy as all the termites

Together we are artists, antiquarians, astrobiologists

Together we are explorers — the Arctic, the moon, the cell

Together we are authors — Gilgamesh, Revelation

Paradise Lost, Charlotte’s Web

Together we are inventors — atomic bomb

Gatling gun, the sword, the mace, the fist

Together we are an uncertain wager,

out of control, which could be

passing a point of no return, could

still wake up in time and change

Together we can be so tender with each other,

hungry to love, delighted by beauty, babies, the heart bared

Together we are the ones who occupy this

river land, sow these fields, eat the

rain and sun and stars, weep for

our failures, invite each other to walk simply

watch where we step, pick up our trash,

live like other animals do, considerately

This and 39 other works by 30 artists and writers can be seen and interacted with through January 28th, Monday through Saturday, 1pm-5pm.

Come to the second [annual] BIZARRE BAZAAR at The Art Garden during Shelburne Falls’ Moonlight Magic night, Friday, November 25th from 4:30-10pm.  Eight local artist-vendors will be selling their creations (mixed-media pieces, cards, prints, jewelry, wearable art, accessories, candles, ornaments, etc.)

Shelburne Falls will be lit with hundreds of luminaries and the trolley will be running between the Salmon Falls Artisan Showroom and The Art Garden.  We’ll have refreshments, hot tea and holiday cheer!

There are many ways you can participate in this upcoming Community Exhibit!
Visit The Art Garden during the month of November:
to add to a collaborative community poem that got started on November 5th,
during the Art Walk…
have your picture taken for a community portrait ‘flip-book’…
mark where you live on our community map…
and/or contribute to a collaborative community mandala-collage…

You can also use our open studio hours to make something for the exhibit,
or bring in something you’ve made that reflects on the theme of community
during the week prior to the exhibit deadline.

Ride the Trolley to The Art Garden tonight (for free) during the Shelburne Falls Art Walk, 5pm-8pm. The trolley runs between the Salmon Falls Artisan Showroom and The Art Garden.  Stop into Salmon Falls before or after you visit us. At The Art Garden you can participate in a number of collaborative, community art projects:  add a line to a community poem, help create a community collage, locate yourself on a community map, and have your picture taken for a community portrait. These works will become part of  “Together We Are…”  The Art of Community, an upcoming Community Exhibit about Community that opens in December. Details in the next post (or at The Art Garden tonight!)

Fall Drop-in Art-making hours are Monday through Saturday, 1pm-5pm.

Drop-in Art-making is for people of all ages and experience.  The Art Garden offers a nurturing, non-judgmental, and inspiring environment with communal studio space, art materials, and instructional support and guidance so that children, youth, families and adults can explore, develop and share their creativity.  See our Calendar for class and workshop hours.
